From Germany to Brazil with the rule mastered

Returning to Brazil is an important decision, and the logistics of the move need not be a problem. Our team handles the entire import process so you can focus on your new phase of life.

The critical stage of this route is in Brazil: the cargo must arrive within the 3 months before to 6 months after window, and the customs duty relief requires proof of more than 1 year of residence abroad. It is exactly at this end that we have our own team, with the DSI registration and the customs clearance conducted by us.

📦

Collection and packing in Germany

Accredited agents from our international network collect and pack your household goods and personal effects at your residence in Germany, accompanied by our team and with an inventory prepared in the format accepted by the Receita Federal do Brasil (Brazilian Federal Revenue Service).

🚢

Secure international transportation

Your international move is transported by sea or air from Germany to Brazil, with tracking and monitoring at every stage.

📄

Customs clearance in Brazil

We file the DSI in Siscomex through an authorized customs broker and manage the release at the Receita Federal do Brasil and the customs clearance at the Brazilian port or airport with our own team.

🏠

Delivery and assembly at your new home

After customs clearance, we deliver your goods to the final address in Brazil and assemble your furniture.

🛡️

International insurance included

Your move is covered by international insurance that protects the entire journey — from collection in Germany to delivery at the final address in Brazil, including the storage period and customs clearance.

📦 What you can bring from Germany to Brazil

Furniture and appliances
Clothes and personal items
Electronics (laptop, TV, etc.)
Books, documents and personal items

Transit Times Germany → Brazil

Estimated door-to-door transit times, subject to the shipping line's or airline's schedule. They include collection, packing, customs clearance at origin and destination, and final delivery. The transit time for your move is confirmed in the quote after the service and route are defined.

Exclusive container or consolidation?

The break-even point is around 13 to 15 cubic meters. Below that volume, groupage tends to be more economical. Above it, an exclusive 20-foot container is normally cheaper and also shortens the transit time, because it avoids the consolidation and deconsolidation stages — which usually add up to 4 to 8 days.

Documentation and customs at both ends

A move back to Brazil goes through two distinct customs authorities, each with its own requirements. Learn what is required at each stage.

Departure from Germany

Zoll (Generalzolldirektion)

  1. 1

    Export declaration of the goods

Registration of the exit of the goods from the customs territory of the European Union, conducted by accredited agents of our network in Germany, with issuance of the bill of lading in the name of the owner of the goods.

  2. 2

Termination of purpose linkage, when applicable

If your goods entered Germany as Übersiedlungsgut exempt less than 12 months ago, they are still under customs supervision and under the binding for a specific purpose (Zweckbindung). In that case, the exit must be processed with the supervising customs before shipment, and not afterwards. All this procedure is managed by One Moving, for your convenience.

  3. 3

    Detailed inventory in Portuguese

Complete list of goods, volume by volume, with description and estimated values. It is the base document for the declaration in Brazil, and it is the Brazilian customs that defines this format, so we prepare the inventory in the Brazilian standard rather than the German format. All preparation is done by our team during packing and managed by One Moving for your convenience.

Entry into Brazil

Receita Federal do Brasil

  1. 1

    DSI — Simplified Import Declaration

Registration of the move in Siscomex, performed by a customs broker. It is the formal instrument of declaration of the unaccompanied baggage and the document that opens customs clearance in Brazil. One Moving hires and coordinates the customs broker and monitors the registration until release, for your convenience.

  2. 2

Passport with entry and exit stamps

Proof of period of residence abroad. The passport is the document that supports the right to customs duty relief, so it must present the entries legibly and completely.

  3. 3

    Proof of residence abroad

The expanded customs duty relief for furniture and household goods and personal effects requires proof of effective residence abroad for more than one year. In inspection practice, the evidence that supports the customs clearance is the Declaration of Residence issued by the Brazilian Consulate of the city where you live and utility bills in your name, such as water, electricity, gas and internet. Documents such as Anmeldung or Meldebescheinigung, rental contract, employment contract and German tax returns form part of the dossier as supporting evidence, but do not prove residence on their own: they attest authorization to reside, not effective residence. We indicate exactly which documents to gather and organize the dossier: One Moving manages this step for your convenience.

  4. 4

    Bill of lading and inventory

Bill of lading (BL for maritime or AWB for air) issued in the name of the owner of the goods, accompanied by the detailed inventory with description and estimated values.

The legal window: 3 months before to 6 months after disembarkation

Unaccompanied baggage must arrive in Brazil in the interval from 3 months before to 6 months after the date of your final disembarkation in the country. Outside this window, the Receita Federal do Brasil may deny the treatment as a move and tax the cargo as a regular import. It is the most decisive deadline of the route, and that is why we plan the shipment date based on your arrival date, not the other way around. One point that often causes confusion: this window allows the cargo to arrive before you, but customs clearance is only performed with the traveler already in Brazilian territory, because the Receita Federal requires proof of your arrival to release the goods. Anticipating shipment to gain time does not work: the cargo arrives and remains idle, generating storage and demurrage. For that reason we align the shipment date with your disembarkation, with the necessary margin.

The customs duty relief requires more than 1 year of residence abroad

The customs duty relief applies to those who resided abroad for a period longer than 1 year. Those who stayed less than 1 year are entitled to a different treatment, with taxation on the goods, although there may be partial customs duty relief on certain household goods and personal effects. We assess your situation before shipment, based on passport records and proof of residence.

Departure before 12 months requires addressing the Zweckbindung

This is the point almost no one checks. If you entered Germany and released your move as Übersiedlungsgut exempt, the goods remain under customs supervision for 12 months counted from acceptance of the request, and during that period they cannot be transferred to third parties. A new move within this time must be communicated in advance to the supervising customs, with information on the new address. We verify this before shipping, because violation of the Zweckbindung cancels the original exemption and generates retroactive charging of German taxes.

Vehicles are not included in the relocation exemption

Automobiles, motorcycles and other motor vehicles are not considered baggage and are not covered by the move exemption to Brazil. Vehicle importation follows its own regime, with full taxation and specific requirements, and the same applies to boats and aircraft. The rule is the opposite of the German one, which admits private vehicles in the Übersiedlungsgut, and this inversion surprises those who have already made the journey back.

New goods and commercial items are excluded from the customs duty relief

The customs duty relief applies to used goods compatible with the domestic life of the returnee. New items, still in their original packaging, in quantities that suggest commercial purpose, or of high value without a history of use, may be taxed individually. The same logic applies on the German side: the non-commercial character of the goods needs to be evident in the inventory.

German 230 V voltage and return to Brazil

Appliances purchased in Germany operate at 230 V at 50 Hz. In Brazil, the residential grid is 127 V or 220 V at 60 Hz, depending on the region. The difference in voltage can be solved with a transformer, but the difference in frequency affects motorized equipment, such as washing machines, dryers and some kitchen appliances. We evaluate item by item in the inventory, because in many cases it is not worth the freight for equipment that will not work well.

Visits to Brazil cannot total more than 45 days

The Brazilian resident abroad may make occasional trips to Brazil without losing the exemption, provided that the total time of those visits does not exceed 45 days in the period of one year outside the country. Above that, the excess is not counted toward completing the minimum residence period, and it will be necessary to remain abroad longer to compensate. One important caution: this count admits exceptions, and specific situations — travel for health reasons, family bereavement, employer requirement, among others — may receive different treatment. If your visits to Brazil have approached this limit, do not conclude on your own that you have lost the exemption: a customs specialist evaluates your specific case before any decision about the move.

Information based on the public guidance of the Receita Federal do Brasil (page on unaccompanied baggage and moving to Brazil, updated in January 2026), IN RFB No. 1.059/2010, and the guidance of the Zoll (Generalzolldirektion) of Germany, consulted in August 2026. The rules may be changed by the competent authorities; we confirm the requirements applicable to your case during service.

Frequently asked questions about moving from Germany to Brazil

Objective answers about legal deadlines, documentation, exemptions and taxation on the route.

By sea transport, the transit time is 50 to 70 days, and by air, 15 to 30 days. These times are door-to-door: they include collection and packing at the residence in Germany, consolidation of the cargo, waiting for the ship’s departure window, the crossing, customs clearance at both ends and final delivery in Brazil with furniture assembly. They should not be compared with port-to-port times published by carriers, which cover only sailing time.

Unaccompanied baggage must arrive in Brazil in the interval from 3 months before to 6 months after the date of your final disembarkation in the country. This is the most important window for the route. If the cargo arrives outside it, the Receita Federal do Brasil (Brazilian Federal Revenue Service) may refuse the treatment as a move and tax everything as a regular import. For that reason we plan the shipment based on your date of arrival in Brazil.

Yes, if you resided abroad for a period exceeding 1 year. In that case, used household goods and personal effects are exempt from taxes, in accordance with the unaccompanied baggage rules of Receita Federal do Brasil (Brazilian Federal Revenue Service) and IN RFB nº 1.059/2010. Those who resided less than 1 year have different treatment, with taxation on the goods. Proof is provided by passport entry and exit records and by residence documents in Germany, such as the Anmeldung or the Meldebescheinigung.

The DSI is the Simplified Import Declaration, registered in Siscomex. It is the formal instrument of declaration of your unaccompanied baggage and the document that opens the customs clearance process in Brazil. The registration is performed by an authorized customs broker, and it is our own team in Brazil that conducts this stage, from registration to release of the cargo.

It may be, and it is the least-checked detail of this route. If you released your move on entry to Germany as Übersiedlungsgut exempt, the goods remain under customs supervision for 12 months counted from acceptance of the request, under the so-called Zweckbindung. During that period there is an obligation to notify the supervising customs in advance of any new move, informing the new address. Violation of these rules cancels the exemption and generates retroactive charging of German taxes. We verify this situation before shipping your cargo.

Not as part of the move. Automobiles, motorcycles and other motor vehicles are not considered baggage under Brazilian legislation and do not fall under the customs duty relief. Vehicle importation follows its own regime, with full taxation and specific requirements, and the same applies to boats and aircraft. This is the opposite of the German rule, which admits private vehicles in Übersiedlungsgut, and this inversion often surprises those who shipped the car on the way out.

It depends on the equipment. The German grid is 230 V at 50 Hz, and the Brazilian grid is 127 V or 220 V at 60 Hz, depending on the region. The difference in voltage can be solved with a transformer, but the difference in frequency affects motorized equipment, such as washing machines, dryers and some kitchen appliances, which may have reduced performance or shorter service life. We evaluate item by item during the inventory compilation, because in many cases the shipping cost is not justified.

Yes, and this is not our preference: it is not possible to conclude the customs clearance before your disembarkation in Brazil. Receita Federal do Brasil (Brazilian Federal Revenue Service) requires, among the documents for the customs clearance, proof of the traveler’s arrival in the country, and the right to the exemption is tied to your definitive disembarkation. The cargo can leave Germany and arrive before you — the legal window allows up to 3 months in advance — but it will remain waiting at the port or airport until you arrive, with storage and demurrage accruing during that interval. That is why we schedule from your disembarkation date, not from the date the house is ready to be packed.

Yes. Pet transport is a process separate from the move of the household goods and personal effects and has its own requirements, which involve a microchip, up-to-date rabies vaccination and an international veterinary certificate issued within the validity period accepted by the Brazilian authorities. Our pet department conducts this process in parallel with the move. We have already transported more than one thousand animals.

Collection, packing and exit documentation in Germany are conducted by accredited agents of our international network, with oversight from our team. Customs clearance in Brazil, including registration of the DSI, and the final delivery with unpacking and assembly are executed by One Moving’s own team. Because the critical stage of this route is meeting the Brazilian legal window, having our own team precisely at that end is what guarantees predictability.
