Exclusive container or consolidation?

The break-even point is around 13 to 15 cubic meters. Below that volume, groupage tends to be more economical. Above it, an exclusive 20-foot container is normally cheaper and also shortens the transit time, because it avoids the consolidation and deconsolidation stages — which usually add up to 4 to 8 days.

Documentation and customs at both ends

A move to the United States goes through two distinct customs authorities, each with its own requirements. Learn what is required at each stage.

Departure from Brazil

Receita Federal do Brasil

  1. 1

    List of goods by volume

Inventory with description and approximate value of the goods, organized box by box and with volumes numbered. It is the basis for all subsequent documentation and insurance. All preparation is carried out by our team during packing and managed by One Moving, for your convenience.

  2. 2

    Export declaration

Registration of the export of the goods with the Receita Federal do Brasil (Brazilian Federal Revenue Service), carried out by a customs broker. One Moving hires and coordinates the customs broker and monitors the release end to end, for your convenience.

  3. 3

Bill of lading in your name

The transport document is issued in the name of the owner of the goods, with the number of volumes shipped. Without it, customs clearance at destination is compromised. Issuance and verification are managed by One Moving, for your convenience.

  4. 4

Personal documents and proof of destination

Copy of passport, visa or residence document in the United States and proof of the expected date of entry into the country.

Entry into the United States

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)

  1. 1

    CBP Form 3299

Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles. It is the mandatory form for those seeking duty-free entry of unaccompanied articles, both for residents and non-residents. Completion and filing are managed by One Moving, for your convenience.

  2. 2

    Correct classification of the goods

Form 3299 separates household goods (bens de casa) from personal effects (efeitos pessoais). Incorrect classification is the main cause of unexpected taxation. We perform this classification item by item together with our agent in the United States: One Moving manages this step for your convenience.

  3. 3

    Importer Security Filing (ISF)

Electronic declaration that must be transmitted to CBP before the vessel's departure from origin. Delay or error in the ISF generates fines and cargo detention. Timely transmission is managed by One Moving, for your convenience.

  4. 4

    Customs clearance and final delivery

Presentation of the documentation to CBP at the port of entry, release of the cargo and transport to the final address, with furniture assembly.

Goods used for at least one year enter duty-free

CBP grants duty exemption to items that have been used in your residence abroad for at least one year and that are not intended for third parties or for sale. Goods without that period of use may be taxed.

Clothing, jewelry and electronics are not household goods and personal effects

CBP classifies clothing, jewelry, photographic equipment, electronics and vehicles as personal effects, and not as household goods. Duty is usually waived on personal effects with more than one year of use, but the rule is different for furniture.

Vehicles are always subject to tax

Automobiles do not enter the United States under the personal effects exemption. Import duty is due in any case, and the vehicle must meet United States emission and safety standards.

Ten-year deadline after last arrival

To import household goods and personal effects with exemption, the applicant must not wait more than 10 years after their last arrival in the United States.

Information based on public guidance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Receita Federal do Brasil, consulted in August 2026. Rules may be changed by the competent authorities; we will confirm the requirements applicable to your case during our consultation.

Frequently asked questions about moving from Brazil to the USA

Straightforward answers about transit times, documentation, duties and route restrictions.

By sea, transit time from Santos to Miami or Port Everglades is 15 to 25 days; to New York, 20 to 30 days; to Houston, 22 to 33 days; and to Los Angeles or Long Beach, 28 to 35 days. By air, 15 to 30 days. These are door-to-door: they include collection and packing at your residence in Brazil, cargo consolidation, waiting for the vessel's sailing window, the crossing, customs clearance at both ends and final delivery in the United States with furniture assembly. We serve the entire country, and the exact time for your city is confirmed in the quote.

The central document is CBP Form 3299, called Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles. It is required by U.S. Customs and Border Protection for all persons seeking duty-free entry of unaccompanied articles, whether residents or non-residents. In addition, the Importer Security Filing, transmitted to CBP before the vessel's departure, the bill of lading issued in the name of the owner of the goods and the detailed inventory of goods by volume are required.

Items that have been used in your residence abroad for at least 1 year and that are not intended for third parties or for sale enter the United States duty-free. The focus is on classification: CBP considers clothing, jewelry, photographic equipment and electronics as personal effects, not as household effects, and applies its own rule to them. Vehicles are always subject to duty, without exception.

Household goods are household items, such as furniture, utensils and appliances, and enter duty-free when used for at least one year abroad. Personal effects are items of personal use, a category in which CBP includes clothing, jewelry, photographic equipment, electronics and vehicles. Duty is normally waived on personal effects with more than one year of use, but incorrect classification on CBP Form 3299 is the most common cause of unexpected taxation upon arrival.

Yes. To import household goods and personal effects with duty exemption, the applicant must not wait more than 10 years after their last arrival in the United States. After that period, the exemption ceases to apply.

Sea transport is the most economical option per cubic meter and covers most complete residential moves. Air freight makes sense when the volume is small, when there is urgency of timing, or when items have high value relative to weight. In medium and large moves, a combination is usually the best solution: essential items go by air and the remainder by sea.

The break-even point is around 13 to 15 cubic meters. Below that volume, groupage, in which your cargo shares the container with others, tends to be more economical. Above it, an exclusive 20-foot container is normally cheaper and also reduces transit time, because it avoids consolidation and deconsolidation. Groupage typically adds 4 to 8 days to the exclusive container's transit time.

Perishable foods, plants, seeds and animal-origin products without prior authorization are not allowed into the United States. Nearly all foreign-manufactured medicines are also prohibited, and verification must be done with the FDA. Antiques require detailed invoices with the year of production and an age declaration from the seller or importer. Items that are prohibited imports may never enter, regardless of whether they were purchased or received as a gift.
