You must submit it in two copies to the customs officer at the moment of disembarkation at the Japanese airport, and one copy is returned stamped to you. That stamped copy is indispensable to release the unaccompanied baggage later. Japan Customs does not allow this process to be redone: those who forget to declare on arrival or lose the original copy lose the right to the exemption, and the move becomes taxed as commercial cargo. Unaccompanied baggage must be customs cleared within six months counted from the date of your entry into Japan. As maritime transit takes 50 to 70 days, the window is comfortable, but we plan the shipment of the cargo according to the date of your flight so there is no pressure.

The vehicle must have been used prior to entry into Japan, proven by a foreign registration certificate, and the exemption request is made using the T-1280 form in three copies, together with proof of transfer of address. An ISO-standard microchip is required, at least two doses of rabies vaccine administered after the microchip and a serology test in a designated laboratory with a minimum titer of 0.5 IU/ml. After that, the animal must wait 180 days from the blood collection before arriving in Japan. Those who arrive earlier complete the remaining time in quarantine at an Animal Quarantine Service facility. It is also necessary to notify the AQS at least 40 days in advance. In practice, preparation starts about 8 months before the trip, conducted by our pet department. We have already transported more than 1,000 animals.

The logic of this route is the opposite. Since the exemption depends on the C-5360 form that you submit at disembarkation, and because customs clearance must occur within 6 months of your entry, it is safer for your arrival to precede the clearance of the cargo.
