From Canada to Brazil with the rule mastered

Returning to Brazil is an important decision, and the logistics of the move need not be a problem. Our team handles the entire import process so you can focus on your new phase of life.

The critical stage of this route is in Brazil: the cargo must arrive within the window of 3 months before to 6 months after your disembarkation, and the exemption requires proof of more than 1 year of residence abroad. It is precisely at this end that we have our own team, with the DSI registration and customs clearance conducted by us. On the export side, we verify whether your goods are still subject to the 12-month transfer restriction of the Canadian entry exemption.

📦

Pickup and packing in Canada

Agents accredited within our international network collect and pack your household goods and personal effects at your residence in Canada, accompanied by our team and with an inventory prepared in the format accepted by the Receita Federal do Brasil (Brazilian Federal Revenue Service).

🚢

Secure international transportation

Your international move is transported by sea or air from Canada to Brazil, with tracking and monitoring at every stage.

📄

Customs clearance in Brazil

We file the DSI in Siscomex through an authorized customs broker and conduct the release by the Receita Federal and the customs clearance at the Brazilian port or airport with our own team.

🏠

Delivery and assembly at your new home

After customs clearance, we deliver your household goods and personal effects to the final address in Brazil and assemble your furniture.

🛡️

International insurance included

Your move is covered by international insurance that covers the entire journey — from collection in Canada to delivery at the final address in Brazil, including the storage period and customs clearance.

📦 What you can bring from Canada to Brazil

Furniture and appliances
Clothes and personal items
Electronics (laptop, TV, etc.)
Books, documents and personal items
Artworks and valuable objects
Used household goods and personal effects

Items restricted for import into Brazil:

Vehicles (excluded from the moving exemption)
New goods in commercial quantities
Perishable food and plants

Returning home? We take care of everything

Whether by personal decision, end of employment contract or retirement, returning to Brazil is a special moment. Leave the logistics of the move to those who understand the matter.

We take care of every detail so that your household goods and personal effects arrive safely in Brazil while you prepare for the new phase.

Estimated door-to-door transit times, subject to the shipping line's or airline's schedule. They include collection, packing, customs clearance at origin and destination, and final delivery. The transit time for your move is confirmed in the quote after the service and route are defined.

Exclusive container or consolidation?

The break-even point is around 13 to 15 cubic meters. Below that volume, groupage tends to be more economical. Above it, an exclusive 20-foot container is normally cheaper and also shortens the transit time, because it avoids the consolidation and deconsolidation stages — which usually add up to 4 to 8 days.

Documentation and customs at both ends

A move back to Brazil goes through two distinct customs authorities, each with its own requirements. Learn what is required at each stage.

Departure from Canada

CBSA — Canada Border Services Agency

  1. 1

    Signed inventory of goods

Complete list of the goods that will leave the country, volume by volume, signed by the owner. The same inventory serves as the basis for the import declaration in Brazil, and it is Brazilian customs that defines this format, so we prepare a single document already in the format required there. All preparation is carried out by our team during packing and managed by One Moving, for your convenience.

  2. 2

Proof of termination of Canadian residence

Documents that demonstrate the end of your residential tie in Canada: termination of a lease agreement or sale of the property, termination of employment contract, cancellation of the provincial health plan and proof of address for the period. We indicate exactly which documents to gather and organize the dossier: One Moving manages this stage for your convenience.

  3. 3

Verification of the 12-month restriction, when applicable

If you entered Canada with the benefit of the settlers effects less than 12 months ago, the goods cannot be sold or otherwise alienated during that period. We verify this situation before shipment, because a departure move within the window needs to be structured so as not to constitute an alienation of the benefited goods. All these procedures are managed by One Moving for your convenience.

Entry into Brazil

Receita Federal do Brasil

  1. 1

    DSI — Simplified Import Declaration

The international move is declared in Siscomex via the DSI, registered by an authorized customs broker. Our own team in Brazil conducts this registration and monitors the customs clearance until release.

  2. 2

Proof of residence abroad for more than 1 year

The expanded customs duty relief for furniture and household goods and personal effects requires proof of effective residence abroad for more than 1 year. In enforcement practice, the evidence that supports the clearance is the Declaration of Residence issued by the Brazilian Consulate in the city where you live and utility bills in your name, such as water, electricity, gas and internet. Documents such as a work permit or permanent residence registration, lease agreement, employment contract and notices of assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency form the dossier as support, but do not prove residence on their own: they attest authorization to reside, not effective residence. We specify exactly which documents to gather and organize the dossier: One Moving manages this stage for your convenience.

  3. 3

Passport with entry and exit stamps

The passport is the document that records the date of your disembarkation in Brazil, and it is from that date that the legal deadlines for the international move are counted. We gather the necessary copies before registering the DSI.

  4. 4

Bill of lading and proof of ownership

Bill of lading issued in the name of the owner of the goods and, for high-value items or items identifiable by serial number, proof of purchase demonstrating prior use abroad.

The legal window is 3 months before to 6 months after

Unaccompanied baggage must arrive in Brazil within a window that begins 3 months before and ends 6 months after your disembarkation in the country. Outside this window, the exemption is lost and the move is treated as a regular import, with taxes applied. On this route the warning is even more relevant: maritime transit from Canada takes 50 to 78 days door-to-door depending on the point of departure, the longest of our routes. Defining the shipping date before buying the ticket ceases to be a recommendation and becomes a condition to maintain the exemption. One point that often causes confusion: this window allows the cargo to arrive before you, but customs clearance is only carried out with the traveller already in Brazilian territory, because the Receita Federal do Brasil (Brazilian Federal Revenue Service) requires proof of your arrival to release the goods. Anticipating shipment to gain time does not work: the cargo arrives and remains idle, generating storage and demurrage. For this reason we align the shipping date to your disembarkation date, with the necessary margin.

Departure via the west coast significantly lengthens the transit time

The difference between leaving from Montreal and leaving from Vancouver is not days, it is weeks. Via the east coast, door-to-door transit is in the range of 50 to 70 days. Via the west coast, it rises to 58 to 78 days, because the maritime route is substantially longer. If you live in Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton, we evaluate with you the alternative of road transfer to an eastern port, comparing cost and transit time before closing the operation, because the Brazilian legal window does not allow improvisation.

Proof of more than 1 year of residence abroad

The tax exemption on import requires proof of residence abroad for a period longer than 1 year. Those who lived less than that do not lose the right to bring the move, but they lose the exemption. We assemble the proof dossier with you before shipment, gathering the work permit or proof of permanent residence, employment and rental contracts, notices of assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency and consular registration, because this set is what supports the request before the Receita Federal.

The car that entered Canada does not return with exemption

This is the reversal that most surprises those who brought the vehicle on the outbound move. The Canadian rule allows the car within the settlers effects, provided the cumulative conditions of ownership, licensing, effective use on public roads, registration, insurance and eligibility with Transport Canada are met. The Brazilian rule, by contrast, excludes motor vehicles from the exemption for unaccompanied baggage. Bringing the car back is possible, but constitutes a distinct import operation, with its own taxes, and must be quoted separately from the move of the household goods.

If you left Canada less than 12 months ago, pay attention to the local rule

The definition of goods under tariff item 9807.00.00 does not include those that are sold or otherwise disposed of within 12 months after importation. Anyone who entered Canada with the benefit and is returning to Brazil before completing that period needs to structure the departure so as not to constitute disposal of the benefited goods. This is common in shortened employment contracts or in early returns for family reasons, and handling it before shipment avoids discussion with the CBSA later.

Voltage: Canada uses 120 V, Brazil uses 127 V or 220 V

The Canadian electrical network operates at 120 V with Type A and B plugs, the same standard as the United States. In Brazil, voltage varies between 127 V and 220 V depending on the region. Unlike European routes, compatibility is reasonably good in 127 V areas, but 120 V equipment will not operate directly in 220 V regions without a transformer. We evaluate item by item in the inventory, because often the freight for a large appliance costs more than buying an equivalent in Brazil.

New items and items in commercial quantities are excluded

The exemption covers used household goods and personal effects. New items, still in original packaging, or items in quantities suggesting commercial destination may be taxed individually or held for inspection. We review the inventory with you before shipment precisely to separate these cases and prevent them from delaying the release of the entire cargo.

Visits to Brazil cannot total more than 45 days

The Brazilian resident abroad may make occasional trips to Brazil without losing the exemption, provided that the total time of those visits does not exceed 45 days in the period of one year outside the country. Above that, the excess is not counted toward completing the minimum residence period, and it will be necessary to remain abroad longer to compensate. One important caution: this count admits exceptions, and specific situations — travel for health reasons, family bereavement, employer requirement, among others — may receive different treatment. If your visits to Brazil have approached this limit, do not conclude on your own that you have lost the exemption: a customs specialist evaluates your specific case before any decision about the move.

Information based on the public guidance of the Receita Federal do Brasil (the unaccompanied baggage and moving to Brazil page, updated in January 2026), on IN RFB nº 1.059/2010 and on Memorandum D2-2-1 of the CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency), regarding tariff item 9807.00.00, consulted in August 2026. Rules may be changed by the competent authorities; we confirm the requirements applicable to your case during service.

Frequently asked questions about moving from Canada to Brazil

Objective answers about legal deadlines, documentation, exemptions and taxation on the route.

By sea transport, the transit time is 50 to 78 days depending on the point of departure, and by air, 15 to 30 days. These times are door-to-door: they include collection and packing at your residence in Canada, cargo consolidation, waiting for the ship's departure window, the crossing, customs clearance at both ends and final delivery in Brazil with furniture assembly. Departures from Montreal and Halifax fall in the shorter range; Vancouver and the Canadian west, in the longer. It is the longest route in our set, and the planning reflects that.

Yes, and this is not our preference: it is not possible to complete the customs clearance before your disembarkation in Brazil. The Receita Federal requires, among the documents for clearance, proof of the traveler's arrival in the country, and the right to the exemption is tied to your definitive disembarkation. The cargo may leave Canada and arrive before you — the legal window allows up to 3 months in advance — but it will remain waiting at the port or airport until you arrive, with storage and demurrage charges accruing in that interval. That is why we schedule from your disembarkation date, not from the date the house is ready to be packed.

Unaccompanied baggage must arrive within the window that runs from 3 months before to 6 months after your disembarkation in Brazil. It is a strict deadline: outside it, the exemption is lost and the cargo is treated as a regular import, with taxes. On this route attention is heightened because the crossing can take up to 78 days door-to-door when departing from the west coast. Shipping must be planned before you set your flight date, and that is what we do at the start of the process.

It depends on your timeframe and volume, and it is a calculation we make case by case. Leaving via the west coast means 58 to 78 days door-to-door; via the east coast, 50 to 70 days. The overland transfer from Vancouver to an east coast port has a cost, but in some scenarios it is worthwhile, especially when your disembarkation date in Brazil is already set and the 6-month legal window is tight. We present both alternatives with timing and price before you decide.

The DSI is the Simplified Import Declaration, registered in Siscomex, the system of the Receita Federal, by an authorized customs broker. It is through it that the move is declared and the exemption is requested. On this route, registration of the DSI and all monitoring of the clearance are conducted by One Moving's own team in Brazil, without intermediaries, which is precisely the most sensitive part of a return move.

Proof is made by a set of documents, and the hierarchy among them matters. The two proofs that effectively support the clearance are the Declaration of Residence issued by the Brazilian Consulate of the city where you live and utility bills in your name, such as water, electricity, gas and internet: these demonstrate effective residence at the address. Documents such as the work permit or proof of permanent residence, employment contracts, the rental contract or property deed, notices of assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency and proofs of the provincial health plan enter the dossier as supporting evidence, together with the passport showing entries and exits, but they do not prove residence in isolation, because they attest to the authorization to reside and not the fact of having lived there. We assemble this dossier with you before shipment, because gathering documents abroad after you are already in Brazil is much more difficult.

They are two distinct consequences. On the Brazilian side, the tax exemption requires residence abroad for more than 1 year, so it does not apply: the move may enter, but taxed. On the Canadian side, if you entered the country with the benefit of settlers effects, the goods may not be sold or otherwise disposed of within 12 months after importation, and the departure must be structured so as not to constitute such disposal. We assess both ends before structuring the operation.

Not within the move exemption. Brazilian law excludes motor vehicles from the unaccompanied baggage exemption, unlike the Canadian rule, which admits the vehicle within settlers effects when the conditions of possession, licensure, actual use on public roads, registration, insurance and eligibility with Transport Canada are met. Bringing the car back is possible, but it constitutes a separate import operation, with its own taxes and requirements, and must be quoted independently from the household goods move.

Compatibility here is better than on European routes, but it is not automatic. Canada operates on 120 V with Type A and B plugs, close to the Brazilian standard of 127 V. In Brazilian regions with 127 V, many devices work. In 220 V regions, a permanent transformer is required. Bivolt equipment, such as notebooks and chargers, works in any case. We analyse item by item in the pre-move survey, because for large appliances the freight often does not justify the cost.

Yes. Transporting the animal is a process separate from the move of the goods, with its own requirements for microchip, rabies vaccination, international veterinary certificate and compliance with Brazil's entry rules. Our pet department conducts this process in parallel with the move, synchronizing the documentation with your flight dates. We have already transported more than 1,000 animals.

The exemption covers used household goods and personal effects. Excluded are motor vehicles, new goods in original packaging, items in quantities that suggest commercial destination, as well as perishable foods, plants and products of animal origin subject to sanitary control. We review the inventory before shipment to separate these cases, because a single poorly declared item can hold the entire cargo at the port.

In Canada we work with accredited agents from our international network for collection, packing and exit documentation in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Halifax and Calgary. In Brazil we have our own team: we are the ones who register the DSI in Siscomex, conduct the customs clearance with the Receita Federal do Brasil (Brazilian Federal Revenue Service) and perform delivery and assembly at your final address. On this route, the critical end is the Brazilian one, and it is precisely where we do not depend on third parties.
